Groceries and Single People

  • by

I come before you tonight with one rant and one rant only:

Why aren’t there more grocery stores catering to single households in this country?!

Are the people who run Trader Joe’s the only ones in the United States of America who have got it right? They seem to understand that some of us don’t need a whole gallon of milk, heck not even half.

And do I have to make another trip to Whole Foods or some local boutique bakery every time just to get a customized loaf of bread?

At most supermarkets, the only aisles where you will certainly find smaller portions is in the frozen food area. Are you kidding me, US of A? The only edible item I want frozen is my ice! I may freeze some fruit or veggies occasionally…rarely, but it’s usually for smoothies or for preservation reasons when I end up buying them by the bag, instead of per pound, but I’m not a fan of defrosting / thawing before cooking.

The problem that I encounter the most, though, is when buying milk. I’ve had to throw away half a carton too many times because I can’t finish the whole thing before the expiration date — and lactose-free milk ain’t cheap! It’s easier to find smaller cartons in the whole milk section, but that’s not what I need. Do your research and you’ll find that there are plenty of single households who need these items in smaller portions, so why not sell it?

Thankfully I know where to go in the city I live now when I need smaller or individual portions; things like juice, seafood, or meats, but sometimes I wish I could just get all the groceries at one place.

Don’t tell me to cook large portions and freeze the rest as a solution because it won’t happen. 1) I don’t even like cooking, 2) I prefer staying away from frozen or canned foods, and 3) I despise wasting food, so the idea of buying large quantities that may potentially go to waste make me cringe.

Who can relate?

Grocery stores heads, if you’re reading this, please stop making life for single people (who like eating healthy) so difficult and be more inclusive!
