A Walk in the (Snowy) Park

  • by

We met on a social media comment section of a popular page. Arguing about each other’s point of view, we took the angry exchange to direct messaging. Well, he DM-ed me first. He said he was sorry if he came off as too aggressive, but he wanted to end the convo in good terms because I “seemed like a cool girl.” Oh here we go… I thought.

I sent him a thumbs-up emoji and wrote, “no hard feelings.” I meant it.

After a couple of days, when things calmed down on that page and I thought this crazy guy had gone away, I woke up to a ton of “likes” by him. Oh, and he was now following me on there. Great, he never really left. “Is that your natural hair? because it’s awesome,” he wrote, in 2018, about a picture from 2015.

It is no secret that when you have a public profile you’re putting yourself out there, you’re open for invasion. Luckily, it’s just words and photography, I think, so what could they really do with that information about me? Well, for starters they can guess your personality type; what you hate, what you like, where you live, where you’ve been… And, I guess if you’re a shady person, that could be a problem. Private, maybe, but shady, I am not — I like to think.

“You’re not a fan of snow,” he continued. True, I thought, but where on my page did he get that from? Did he go on every post with a magnifying glass? “Ah, you like to walk…have you ever gone for a walk in the snow?” If walking to and from school counts, then, yes. But, of course he meant a romantic walk. People do that, you know.

“Yes,” I replied to his question about my hair, leaving him hanging for the rest of his questionnaire.

I told you I wasn’t shady; just private.

Meanwhile, I secretly gave his question a thought and let my imagination run wild, picturing a scenario where I didn’t mind the cold and walked alongside a tall handsome man in a peacoat. It would be so beautiful — if I didn’t mind the cold.
