The Rescue Plan – Excerpt

“So who contacted who first?”
“They hit me up, of course.”
“Too scared to make the first move?”
“More like too broke,” Meena replied. “You know it’s not totally free, right? They do have a few options for free accounts, like sending them a preselected “You’ve got my attention” notice and other lame sh-t. But those guys are clearly paying members and I noticed right away that if they initiated the contact, we could exchange IM’s or emails, so I wasted no time.”
Gera nodded in approval and high-fived Meena. “So when’s the first date and where is he taking you?”
“You mean us? Where is he taking us?” Tilting her head to one side, Gera narrowed her eyes and listened. “I’m gonna need rescue if he ends up being a serial killer.”
Gera rolled her eyes “Okay, count me in, crazy.”
“By the way, he’s meeting me at Floren’s at eight, after my last class, does that work?”
“Floren’s across the bridge?”
“Had to pick a place Luca hates going to.”
Gera chuckled and shook her head. “I’m there.”
“You could sit at the café with the big clear windows across the street, if you want, that way you can witness my murder and tell the world about it.”
“You’re so dramatic! You’ll be fine.”
Meanwhile, Meena had doubts. She had never done that before. Her stomach was in knots and she couldn’t stop biting her nails. She knew she could change her mind if she wanted to and she had a whole day to think about it, but the notifications kept coming in strong, encouraging her curiosity.
She freshened up and then headed to the city. On her way, she called Gera to update her.
After struggling to find a close parking spot, the girls agreed to quickly meet in the restroom.
“How do I look?” asked Meena.
“You brought changing clothes to school?”
“Duh! Tell me, quickly, ‘cause he’s about to be here.”
“Aren’t you too covered up? Otherwise you look great!”
“I’ll undo these two top buttons if I like him.”
“Make it three, and let that be our secret signal.”
Meena laughed, but approved of Gera’s idea. “And if I don’t like him? What should I do?”
“Tie your hair in a ponytail,” said Gera without hesitation. “Is that when I rescue you?”
“Yes, that’s when you come in. And I don’t care what you do, just save me.”
The girls went on with their plan…
After a couple of minutes, Gera came out of the restroom and was ready to execute her part of the plan, but she was met with a situation they didn’t discuss.
