What It Takes to Be a Writer

This is kind of a follow-up to Don’t Hit the Brakes! – which I posted last year (last month, to be less dramatic). It’s just that I can’t get enough of the raw reality that is to be an author, or an artist who wants to sell. I’ll post the words again:

You start writing the next one. And after you finish that one, you start on the next, and on and on. And that’s what it is to be a writer, honey. You just keep throwing them against the wall and hoping against hope that, eventually, something sticks.  — Tick, Tick… BOOM (film about aspiring composer Jonathan Larson

And more recently, I watched The Radiant Child (part of the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and combined these films have made me feel a lot better about this insanity of a process that is writing, as well as all my artistic ambitions. You must really be devoted to your craft to stick to it through all the ups and downs. So far, I think I’m crazy, but I can’t see myself not doing it. It runs deep in my veins.

I’m still working on what I called: Not Another Inspirational Quote, which I thought would be cool if I did 100 illustrations to go along with each quote, and I’ve switched techniques about four times, and now I’m like, but why? But I’m proud of myself for doing the ridiculous for art’s sake. It gives me some kind of happiness. I think it’s called passion. If you can relate in any way, don’t stop, keep it up! xo
