Best Kept Secret
An ounce of care would be nice
from them you shower with awes,
allow to eat your bread,
take up unearned space in your shed
Who knew flesh and bones could hurt so
and leave you at the mercy of time
that never seems to change a thing
no matter how much of it’s passed
Rising from my tomb at dawn
to grant wishes and put out fires
unconditionally since reciprocity is
a rare little thing to be found in their soul
Frustrated by my own weakness that
gives me dark circles, ties up my gut,
betrays my ego and cancels out my worth
at times I need it the most
A blow to the ego it is realizing
you’re someone’s best kept secret
when you deserve to be known
for the special favors you’ve done.
